Second Season World Circuit Chronicles Fourth Season

Third
World Circuit Championship

Season Preview

I didn't improve as much as I wanted in my Second season. Even though I managed 11 pole positions, two wins and fourth in the final standings were all I could put on the board. I am still making silly mistakes by not concentrating properly. For the Third season, Bob and I are again with the McLaren-Honda team. I am determined to blend speed with patience and win the World Driving Championship!

QUALIFYING Smashed my previous best lap time by nearly a second. Amazing! I didn't think it was possible. I'm on pole by more than two seconds!
RACE Bob and one of the Williams drivers got the jump on me at the start. I took the Williams under braking for the first turn and got by Bob at the hairpin. Led the rest of the way with Bob not far behind. Barely got the fastest lap.

QUALIFYING Another pole position. Only .003 off of my best lap time ever here. Took two notches off both wings which gave me more speed on the straights.
RACE Accidentally punted a Williams (Nigel Mansell, I think) off at the first corner which I think slowed everybody behind me. Led the rest of the way with Bob desperately trying to overtake me. I was called before the stewards because of the first corner incident. Me, Bob and McLaren-Honda are easily leading the World Championship!

QUALIFYING Did my quickest lap ever and got the pole. Taking Piratella, Variante Alta and Variante Bassa in fourth gear.
RACE Nigel Mansell out-dragged me at the start, but I nipped inside of him under braking for the tight left-hander at Tosa. I did it cleanly this time! Led the rest of the way with Mansell always in my mirrors.

QUALIFYING Went straight out and did my best ever time on my first hot lap!
RACE Just like last season. Led from the start. Was even pulling away towards the end. Well! Four wins in four races. I had the pole by over a second and the fastest race lap by a second. I'm leading the Championship by 21 points! Bob is still in second.

QUALIFYING On the pole by nearly a second. Crashed out on my last three runs. Taking the last chicane in fifth gear.
RACE Managed to cleanly nip inside Nigel Mansell at the first turn and was leading. Took my front wing off after missing the first chicane on the fourth lap due to a lapse in concentration. In the ensuing action, all of the front runners must have been damaged or held up, because I was all alone still in first place. I stayed out with the damaged front wing and salvaged second place behind Andrea de Cesaris by making my car very wide. Now I have to go to a meeting Max, Bernie and Ron. Or is it Bernie, Max and Ron?

QUALIFYING Had a lot of trouble getting a clear run. Am I making too many enemies? It's just a game, right?
RACE Not a good race. I made a terrible start. Just no revs. Managed to get back into second behind Bob by out-braking nearly everybody after the long drag down to the first turn. Nigel Mansell got by me, then Riccardo Patrese. I left the road at the first turn trying to re-take Patrese and had to pit to fix my front wing. Got hit on pit road and had to pit again to fix the rear wing. Eric Bernard took us both into the grass at the exit of Piralta, the long right-hander leading onto the main straight. Then I crashed into Bernard at the end of the straight. After the troubles in the last two races, I still hold a 21 point lead in the Championship.

QUALIFYING It took me while to get the times. This is a tricky circuit, sometimes it seems easy, sometimes, it doesn't. The sharp dive into the Imola bend and the blast into the tight Lycee right-hander are causing me problems. Taking the first part of Estoril bend in sixth gear, then changing down to fifth.
RACE In a virtual replay of the race here last season, Bob got by me at the start, but I got back past at the hairpin and was leading. Several off-course excursions, mostly at Lycee bend, dropped me well back.

QUALIFYING My quickest lap ever! On the pole. Ran wide on the last corner on my hot lap. This circuit is like Imola, Magny-Cours and Suzuka. I'll suddenly do a quick lap, but then I'm puzzled as to how I made up the time.
RACE Just like last season. I was nudged off at Beckets on the first lap. This time it was Riccardo Patrese and I was leading. At least I salvaged the fastest lap. Suddenly, my points lead has dwindled to five! Nigel Mansell is closing. I wonder if Patrese is helping? No, it's just a game. Right? In any case, after winning the first four races of the season, I now haven't scored any points in the last three. I really need to turn this around! Bob got his first win of the season.

QUALIFYING Very nearly my quickest lap ever. Yet another pole position.
RACE Maybe I don't really have it! Maybe I don't deserve to win the World Championship? Nigel Mansell got me on the start but I bulled my way back past at the first chicane. I was leading easily when yet again, I lost concentration and went off at the next to last corner mid-way through the race. I hastily re-joined right in front of the pack and got tangled up with them at the first corner and had to pit. I've now lost the Championship lead because of yet another stupid mistake.

QUALIFYING Very nearly my best lap time ever here. I threw on five notches on both wings, but I'm still very slow though the corners. This is the most difficult circuit of all for me.
RACE Managed to get myself up into third place in the first few corners. Held the field behind me the whole way while the Williams pair just disappeared up the road. This circuit really baffles me!

QUALIFYING Did my quickest lap ever by over 1.5 seconds! I just haven't been driving fast enough here! On the front row.
RACE I was in third place on the first lap when the handle on my joystick snapped right in the middle of the daunting Eau Rouge, causing me to crash. I immediately paused the simulation (something I vowed never to do, but this was different), jumped into my real car, drove 25 miles to CompUSA and bought another joystick. I plugged in the new joystick and resumed the race. The new joystick wouldn't work because it hadn't been calibrated, so I had to finish the race with the broken one. I pitted to fix the front wing. A lot of other cars were also pitting. Crashed again at Eau Rouge and drove the last laps with a damaged front wing and a broken joystick. The Championship is starting to slip away. Williams-Renault has taken over the lead in the Constructor's Championship.

QUALIFYING Took five turns off both wings and did my quickest lap ever by almost a second! Team-mate Bob failed to qualify!
RACE Had a terrific dice with Nigel Mansell the whole race. Mansell got the jump on me at the start (I really have trouble with the starts), but I cleanly out-braked him into the first chicane. I ran wide coming out of the Ascari chicane on the last lap, managing to stay ahead of Mansell, but Riccardo Patrese got past both of us for the win.

QUALIFYING This circuit baffles me. I did my quickest time ever, but I'm not seeing where I'm improving. Taking the first part of Spoon Curve in fifth gear, then changing down to third.
RACE I had it going. Bulled my way into the lead exiting the second part of First Curve. I was keeping it on the road, in the lead, when I stupidly tangled with a Minardi heading into the next to last lap. I had been driving very defensively throughout. Even though I had been leading, I had only the 25th fastest lap of the race! Desperate men do desperate things. The FIA fined me $250,000 for my actions. I didn't pay, waving my WORLD CIRCUIT license agreement in their faces and telling them to get stuffed. Now, if I manage to win at Adelaide and Nigel Mansell gets no points, I wonder how the simulation will handle it. We would be equal on points, but I will have more wins and therefore should be declared World Champion.

QUALIFYING My quickest lap ever and my 12th pole position of the season.
RACE A scramble at the start got Riccardo Patrese turned around in front of me. I got away from that tangle only to hit Nigel Mansell when trying to out-brake him at the end of Brabham straight. After all that, I was running second to Patrese, trying to catch up. The simulation didn't indicate that Mansell was out and I didn't know how far back he was (turned out he finished out of the points). I knew that second place wasn't going to be enough, so I pushed very hard and fell off the road. I recovered and carried on, trading fastest laps with Patrese until he got it on the last lap. I sportingly congratulated Mansell on his World Championship while reminding him that I had more wins and pole positions and spitting on his shoes.

Season Review

Five races into the season, after Canada, I was leading Nigel Mansell by 31 points. Then I fell into my now famous brain-fade mode and four races later, after Germany, Mansell was leading me by five points. It can happen so quickly! I think my overall performance improved dramatically this season. After winning the first four races, I thought I was on my way. Now I need to keep it all together from start to finish. The whole season. No mistakes. I've had a taste of the Championship now and I want it, but after three seasons, I understand more than ever that it won't be easy! Five wins, 12 pole positions and second place in the World Championship is a big improvement over last season. I had another brilliant win at Monaco, along with good wins at Phoenix and San Marino. A controversial first corner shunt at Interlagos, wild driving at Montreal plus a very bad race at Suzuka were the low points of my season. I'll practice my starts, have a new attitude as well as a new joystick, and give it another go!
