First Season World Circuit Chronicles Third Season

Second
World Circuit Championship

Season Preview

After making a spectacular but somewhat controversial debut in my First World Championship season, I was determined to try and calm down a little. Bob and I are again team-mates on Ron Dennis' McLaren-Honda team. My goal was to gain more experience and move up from my sixth place finish. Oh, and also try not to punt Bob off the road anymore!

QUALIFYING Did a time which was two-tenths off of my best ever. Pole position first time out.
RACE Led from the first corner. Half-way through the race, while leading easily, I inadvertently downshifted into the power spin gear while closing on a backmarker, a Minardi, and was hit by somebody. I did manage to salvage the fastest lap. My stupid mistake. I threw away a win. My team must be wondering.

Round 5 of 16
START 1st
FINISH 13th
FASTEST LAP 10th
QUALIFYING Got pole position by nearly a second. Only a tenth off of my best time ever.
RACE Was running in the lead when I got the last chicane all wrong on the third lap and damaged the front wing. Instead of pitting, I gamely held on to sixth, then fifth by driving very defensively and making it hard to pass until a half lap to go when I fell off the road. I'm not concentrating!

QUALIFYING Got pole position, but just barely. I can't figure out why I do such quick lap times here. Having a lot of trouble with the last corner, Lycee Bend.
RACE Bob got by me at the start, but I re-passed him at the hairpin and was leading. A couple of small mistakes dropped me back. I'm not learning patience.

QUALIFYING Getting there. I'm still having problems with this circuit. Did my quickest lap ever.
RACE Got nudged off at Becketts on the first lap. Got hit by somebody while trying to re-join and had to pit to fix my rear wing. I was just trying to mind my own business. Made up some places with some forceful passes.

Round 9 of 16

FINISH 1st
FASTEST LAP 4th
QUALIFYING Got the pole, but just barely.
RACE A heart-pounding win! I had constant threats from a Williams and a Ferrari. At one point, they were trying to go by on either side of me on the last lap! I led all but the first corner. The stewards may fine me for blocking, but I didn't purposely take anybody out. It's rough out there!
DRIVER POINTS (1) Patrese 56, (2) Mansell 42, (3) Mikels 36, (4) Alesi 26, (5) Wyant 24, (6) Prost 13

QUALIFYING A little bit of an improvement. I threw on a lot of wing, but I'm still very slow here.
RACE The hardest race I've ever driven and all for no points! Made up some places on the first lap after possibly causing an accident, then spent the whole race staving off Jean Alesi, not making any mistakes, which is good.
DRIVER POINTS (1) Patrese 62, (2) Mansell 52, (3) Mikels 37, (4) Alesi 26, (5) Wyant 24, (6) Prost 13

Round 11 of 16
START 9th
FINISH 26h
FASTEST LAP 7th
QUALIFYING Getting there. Did a time which was over a second quicker than my best ever. I'm taking Les Fagnes in fourth gear and downshifting all the way to second at the Bus Stop chicane. Crashed at Eau Rouge on my third set of tires and crashed into the back of a Tyrrell in pit lane on my last set. Tried reversing up pit road to my pit and made it, but my crew wouldn't service me.
RACE Crummy race. I drove into the back of somebody at the start. Pitted to have my front wing fixed. I was circulating in last place when I lost concentration at Eau Rouge and crashed on the last lap and damaged the front wing again. Bob got his third win of the season.
DRIVER POINTS (1) Patrese 68, (2) Mansell 55, (3) Mikels 47, (4) Alesi 30, (5) Wyant 24, (6) Prost 14

Round 12 of 16
START 1st
FINISH 2nd
FASTEST LAP 3rd
QUALIFYING Did my best lap time ever, but barely. Got another pole position, barely ahead of Bob. My eighth pole of the season.
RACE I came out of a first corner fracas in second place behind Bob. I still can't make a good start. I think I started another accident, but I'm not sure. Spent the whole race dicing with Nigel Mansell while Bob just drove away. Mansell would slip-stream past me on the straights and I would out-brake him into the next corner. I accidentally punted him off at the Curva de Vialone, the quick left-hander just before the final chicane, on the last lap. Max Mosely wants to see me. Two wins in a row for Bob puts him back in second place in the Championship. Bob and I have scored McLaren-Honda's first one-two finish, however, Ron Dennis reminds us that rival Williams-Renault has already done this nine times!
DRIVER POINTS (1) Patrese 72, (2) Mikels 57, (3) Mansell 55, (4) Alesi 31, (5) Wyant 30, (6) Prost 14

RACE Riccardo Patrese got the jump on me at the start and I ran in second place two to three seconds behind him for the whole race. I made no mistakes and set the fastest lap.

QUALIFYING All of a sudden, I'm quick here. On the pole. I did a time which was 1.3 seconds quicker than my previous best.
RACE Oh well. A Williams got by me at the start and in a wild attempt to out-brake him at the first corner, I ran wide and off the circuit. Got both wings damaged when trying to re-join. At least I salvaged the fastest lap, although Ron Dennis wasn't very pleased!
DRIVER POINTS (1) Patrese 82, (2) Mansell 65, (3) Mikels 64, (4) Wyant 36, (5) Alesi 34, (6) Prost 19

QUALIFYING Getting a little better. I did my quickest lap ever here.
RACE A short one. I must learn to stay on the road! I made up a few positions at the start, then brain-fade set in and I fell off at the second part of First Curve and was crashed out by somebody when I was trying to re-join the race.

FINISH 2nd
FASTEST LAP 1st
QUALIFYING My quickest lap ever and another pole position. I think there is more speed yet.
RACE Riccardo Patrese in the Williams got the jump on me at the start. I had a big moment when someone almost punted me off at the first corner. Afterwards, I just couldn't catch Patrese. I had Bob and Nigel Mansell not far behind me the whole race. Another fastest lap.
DRIVER POINTS (1) Patrese 98, (2) Mansell 78, (3) Mikels 72, (4) Wyant 42, (5) Alesi 38, (6) Prost 21

Season Review

Last season, I was over-exuberant and made a lot of mistakes. This season, I tried to calm down, but I still wasn't concentrating at the level needed for Grand Prix racing. This is really difficult! My shining moment of the season was at Monaco. My other win in Germany was somewhat clouded by accusations of blocking. I was able to demonstrate good concentration at Hungary, Portugal and Adelaide, albiet I wasn't racing for a win, but at least I kept it on the road. As for major brain-fades, Phoenix and Montreal were the low points of the season. I was dominating both races when I made a stupid mistake at Phoenix. In Montreal, it was simply a loss of concentration! I did however manage to improve to fourth in the Championship. I had two wins, an amazing 11 pole positions and five fastest race laps.
