Dropping Points


From 1950 to 1990, drivers were allowed to count only a certain number of races in the World Championship. The system ranged from counting a best percentage of all races in a season to counting a certain number of races in each "half-season". Currently, all races count for both Drivers and Constructors.

Under the system of dropping points, Graham Hill (1964) and Alain Prost (1988) actually scored more total points than the World Champions for those years.

While the Indianapolis 500 was a part of the Driver's Championship from 1950-1960, when the Constructor's Championship was created in 1958, the 500 was not included.
